Making the Right Connections with Maplex

Machine Forming Capabilities

Weidmann’s Maplex pressboard utilizes a sheet forming technology that makes it not only a durable and long-lasting substrate for many applications. Our board making and fiber technology competencies allow us to customize this strong and re-usable sheet material through close collaboration between our engineers and customers.

Maplex is ideal for punching and forming, even into complex three-dimensional shapes providing a unique alternative to less sustainable material options. The basic forming process involves wetting/conditioning, restraining and drying.

Weidmann’s specialized equipment and decades of experience with Maplex allows us to offer our customers a bespoke service at our manufacturing facilities to create prototypes applying forming and extreme bending techniques. It is also possible for furniture manufacturers and fabricators who form wood/plywood to use their own steam forming techniques to form Maplex.

Every project is unique, and we feel it is important for designers and architects to understand that they are able to tap into resources in our engineering and fabrication departments to help answer questions when working with Maplex. However, a general rule of thumb for design considerations is, in single axis machine forming, all bends should have a radius of at least 16 times the material thickness, and, in roll forming cylindrical shapes, the diameter should be at least 80 times the material thickness.

Our Application Development Engineer can discuss the best ways of machine forming Maplex, grade recommendation and small-scale prototyping for your design. Our service also includes a assessment to review our manufacturing capabilities for high volume runs.

Improve your sustainability through better material choices.
